I’d never heard this term before but I came across it today in a conversation. Having no idea what it meant and finding nothing with Google or Bing I asked around. Apparently it is a derogatory term used to identify individuals that reside in rural areas (the boonies).

This unflattering name is very similar to redneck, bumpkin, clodhopper, cornfed, country cousin, hayseed, hillbilly, local yokel and just yokel. I’ve added some interesting images that exemplify the lifestyle of the boondog.
